Culture & History

Culture & HistoryCulture & HistoryVirginia’s Gateway Region is steeped in a vibrant history in both the colonization of the United States of America and before. While Williamsburg and Richmond offer bountiful museums and historic places, you need to look no further than your own backyard to access some of the most history-rich sites in the country. The Gateway Region is not just a Mecca for history buffs and outdoors types, but also provides a variety of art museums and live music to suit any taste. Catch live local music or theater at a number of annual festivals or in smaller venues on any night. For example, Petersburg hosts Friday for the Arts in Old Towne on the second Friday of every month, bringing people together for local acts, a cluster of art galleries, special exhibits and other entertainment. Even Hollywood arrived in the Gateway Region in December 2012, when Steven Spielberg, Sally Field and Daniel Day-Lewis filmed the blockbuster Lincoln in historic downtown Petersburg.
