New Board Brings Regional Approach to Tourism

There’s a new face to tourism in Virginia’s Gateway Region.  As of July 1, the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and Petersburg, and the counties of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, and Prince George have joined forces in a regional tourism marketing initiative – the Petersburg Area Regional Tourism Corporation (PART).

“A regional tourism corporation simply makes sense for this area,” Martha Burton, Assistant to the Executive Director of the Crater Planning District Commission (CPDC) said.  “With the six localities we have a natural marketing area with unique resources and advantages.”

PART’s first major initiative has been participation in the Godspeed Sail, an effort supporters began organizing before the corporation’s formal launch.  Volunteers from across the region have joined forces to represent PART at each of the six major ports along the eastern seaboard.  The ship will conclude its 38 day journey July 25-30 in Newport, RI.  Following the sail, PART will begin work on a new web site, regional marketing strategy, organizational development and more.
