Small Business Scene

Local “restaurant-preneurs” share a passion for food and creativity, collaborating on new products and ways to make their spaces lively and pleasing for customers. One local favorite, Saucy’s Walkup Bar.B.Q., has been recognized as one of the best in South by “Southern Living.” Saucy’s debuted in a converted shipping container, offering only walk-up service at first. As it quickly became popular among local residents and professionals, Saucy’s added a furnished restaurant space, full-service lunch, and bar.

Craft Brewing & Distilling Gateway Style

Similar to national trends, a number of new breweries such as Three Brothers Distillery are now open in the Gateway Region. Three Brothers Distillery is a farm-based venture aiming at bringing “your grandfather’s whiskey” to the local scene. The distillery is located on the Cheerful Chicken Farm bringing lovers of locally produced spirits and vegetables and meats together.

Adaptive Reuse

In recent years, the Gateway Region has found ways to revive its historic landmark properties by converting them into housing units or new small businesses. The following are reconverted properties undertaken by local developer Dave McCormack: Demolition Coffee, the Mayton Transfer Lofts, the Hopewell Lofts, and the Trapezium Brewery.
